THE COMPLEX

We invite you to explore a complex that was created mainly between 1901 and 1910. Everything began with Jurkovič's conversion of the Jestřabí Mill, dating from the early 18th century. The architect made use of its original masonry for the newly emerging Hydrotherapy Institute. Further buildings were gradually constructed and used for hydrotherapy, peat and sulphur treatment procedures for more than a hundred years. Over time their role was taken over by more modern spa facilities, particularly the neighbouring Rehabilitation Pavilion, today known as the Central Baths. In 2012 the complex closed entirely, with only part of the River and Sun Baths remaining in use for summer sunbathing.

Life was returned to this historically significant place only by the renovation carried out between 2021 and 2024, during which the Hydrotherapy Institute (built 1902), the River and Sun Baths (1903), the Sulphur and Peat Baths (1909–1941) and other technical structures (1909) were restored under heritage supervision. The primary goal of the restoration was to preserve the exceptional architectural work of Dušan Jurkovič, which has been nominated as a national cultural monument.

At the heart of the entire complex is the Hydrotherapy Institute building itself, which houses an exhibition dedicated to three phenomena of this place: the healing powers of natural springs, the music of Leoš Janáček and the architecture of Dušan Jurkovič. The space around the original pool is used for relaxation and the hosting of cultural and social events. In the entrance building, alongside the visitor centre, there is also a pleasant café with terrace seating.

The restoration project of the Hydrotherapy Institute complex was carried out and financed by Lázně Luhačovice, a.s., with the contribution of a grant programme of the Ministry for Regional Development – IROP.

The project was designed by Petr Všetečka together with colleagues Karel Menšík and Robert Václavík / TRANSAT architekti. The project was carried out under the supervision of the heritage care department of the National Heritage Institute, Regional Office Kroměříž, and the Department of the Environment – Heritage Care of the Municipal Office of Luhačovice.
